Becoming a Pilates teacher was something I had been thinking about for a while.
I already loved Pilates and the way it made me feel stronger, more connected to my body and more present. But there is a big difference between loving Pilates and knowing how to teach it.
I wanted to understand the why behind the movements, learn how to confidently guide other people through them and develop the skills to create classes that were safe, effective and enjoyable.
That’s what led me to complete my Mat Pilates Teacher Training through Barre Body.
Why Barre Body?
When I started researching Pilates teacher training, I quickly realised there were so many different courses and pathways available.
For me, I wanted a training provider that went beyond simply teaching me a list of exercises.
I wanted to understand anatomy, movement, alignment, cueing, sequencing and, importantly, how to actually teach.
Barre Body’s Mat Pilates training appealed to me because it takes a comprehensive approach to becoming a teacher. The training covers everything from Pilates principles and anatomy to movement repertoire, class planning, sequencing, cueing and practice teaching.
It wasn't just about knowing what an exercise looked like.
It was about understanding what I was asking my clients to do and learning how to communicate that effectively.
Learning to Teach, Not Just Learning Pilates
One of the biggest things I took away from my training was that being a Pilates teacher is about so much more than demonstrating exercises.
You can know every exercise in the repertoire, but that doesn't automatically make you a great teacher.
Teaching Pilates involves watching your clients, understanding how their bodies are moving, giving clear instructions, offering modifications and knowing when to challenge and when to pull back.
I learned about verbal cueing, alignment, sequencing and how to structure a class so that it feels cohesive rather than like a collection of random exercises.
And that's where I really started to appreciate the art of teaching Pilates.
Learning Anatomy Changed the Way I Look at Movement
Before completing my training, anatomy could feel a little intimidating.
But learning anatomy in the context of Pilates made it much more practical and meaningful.
Instead of simply memorising muscles and terminology, I began to understand how the body moves and how different exercises relate to the body in front of me.
That knowledge has changed the way I teach.
I think more carefully about alignment. I pay more attention to how someone is moving rather than simply whether they can perform an exercise. And I'm much more confident making modifications when something doesn't feel right for a client.
Understanding the body has given me a deeper appreciation for how purposeful Pilates can be.
The Importance of Practice Teaching
One of the most valuable parts of becoming a Pilates teacher was actually getting up and teaching.
It's one thing to practise an exercise yourself.
It's another thing entirely to stand at the front of a room with people looking at you, waiting for your next instruction!
Practice teaching gave me the opportunity to work on my voice, my confidence, my cueing and my ability to think on my feet.
It also taught me that you don't have to be a "perfect" teacher from day one.
You learn by doing.
You learn by receiving feedback.
You learn by watching other teachers.
And you learn from every class you teach.
The more I practised, the more comfortable I became with finding my own voice as a teacher.
Finding My Own Teaching Style
Something I didn't expect when I started my teacher training was how much it would help me discover my own teaching style.
When you're learning, it's natural to look at other teachers and wonder how they make everything look so effortless.
But eventually you realise that being a good Pilates teacher isn't about copying someone else.
It's about taking what you've learned and finding a way to communicate it that feels natural to you.
For me, Pilates is about creating an environment where people feel strong, supported and connected to their bodies.
I want my clients to leave a class feeling like they've done something positive for themselves not necessarily because they've been pushed to their limits, but because they've moved with intention and taken time to focus on themselves.
Was Pilates Teacher Training Worth It?
Absolutely.
Teacher training gave me a completely different appreciation for Pilates.
I started the course because I wanted to become qualified to teach.
I finished with a much deeper understanding of movement, anatomy, sequencing and the responsibility that comes with teaching other people's bodies.
And I'm still learning.
I think that's one of the best things about becoming a Pilates teacher. Your education doesn't end when you receive your certificate.
Every client teaches you something.
Every class gives you something to reflect on.
Every time you teach, you become a little more confident and a little more aware.
Would I Recommend Barre Body?
If you're considering becoming a Pilates teacher, I would definitely recommend researching Barre Body and seeing whether its training style is right for you.
For me, I loved that the training wasn't simply about memorising exercises. It gave me the foundations I needed to start teaching with more confidence and understanding.
Completing my Mat Pilates qualification through Barre Body was the beginning of a completely new chapter for me.
If you've ever thought, "I'd love to teach Pilates one day," my advice is simple:
Don't wait until you feel completely ready.
You don't need to know everything before you start.
You just need to be curious, willing to learn and genuinely passionate about helping people move.
The confidence comes with practice.
The knowledge grows with experience.
And the journey of becoming a Pilates teacher starts with that first decision to learn.
I'm so glad I made mine.
